CHEAP-SKATE w/ OKAY DANE, TERRA ROUGE &
WASTED YEARS
@ STAY GOLD, MELBOURNE (AU)
MAY 24, 2024
Nothing is more significant than watching a band on the cusp of a breakout. Since 2022, Cheap-Skate has embarked on a remarkable journey. There is something extraordinary about Blaike Murphy, a truly magnanimous character known for his high-energy shows and hard-hitting lyrics. He is on the cusp of insanity.
He is what brings me out to Stay Gold, Brunswick. On this particularly chilly May evening, the single release party of βCELLPHONE” is Cheap-Skate’s official single release for 2024.Β Β The opening acts included Wasted Years, Terra Rouge, and Okay Dane. Wasted Years, a young and aspiring band with two singles on Spotify, skillfully mixed in some cover songs to add variety and length to their set. Despite being relatively new, they displayed a reserved yet creative approach to their performance tonight.
Brianna Brady is Terra Rouge, supported by the Redbacks, having been playing together since high school, which doesnβt seem so long ago for them. Scratching at the surface of Brady’s lyrics, it’s a very coming-of-age story and directed at a specific demographic, 20 years to my junior; however, that being said, the single βTwo Facedβ has over 77,000 plays on Spotify, Bradyβs vocals ooze a blues appeal, and a dominating stage presence that embraces her alter ego. As previously mentioned, the clever tracks in this collection have a strong blues appeal, which will resonate with the older demographic. The gritty instrumentals and crisp vocals bring to mind female vocalists of the 90s, adding a nostalgic touch. However, it’s important to note that Brady’s work doesn’t have a gothic vibe. Perhaps the fishnets and plaid skirts are the association? So, if you’re expecting gothic music, look somewhere else.
In preparation for this evening’s festivities, I stumbled across a gem in the form of Okay Dane. It is perfectively alternative, so it is right up my alley: self-proclaimed βequal parts sad and gladβ. Iβd agree, it’s an accurate description. Such a relaxed set, and it would be safe to say that you get lost in the lyrical journey, true to the genre. Their songs are smooth and, in my opinion, stellar. 2024βs single βInternational Nihilistβ is special, with cleverly placed female harmonising vocals and a soft, gentle bass guitar opening into a fantastic, explosive guitar riff. It’s a delectable delight for those partial to the alternative genre. Showcasing a definite metamorphosis in track complexity compared toΒ 2019βs work. However, the singles βThreadβ and βWeakβ are equally phenomenal, although more simplistic; I find the tracks lyrically deepβall complex and complicated, with genre perfection.
Blaike Murphyβs Cheap-Skate has been around only since 2022, and I have desperately wanted to see them since they opened for the No Touch Obsession Tour in 2023, which featured Gyroscope and Body Jar. Cheap-Skate is the brainchild of Blaike Murphy, who has his debut album release scheduled for later year. Murphy confirmed that the recording has been completed.
Cheap-Skate is a DIY project, with βCELLPHONEβ being no exception. It was written, recorded, and produced in home studios, school offices, in-house recordings, and live instruments. Of indie origin, Murphy offers a unique and alternative sound, with noticeable and complete creative control, which dedication and work ooze through his performance.
Opening the set with a fan favourite, βMi Casa Su Casaβ, a delectable delight. Itβs a happy, poppy vibe, setting expectations for future things tonight. Cheap-Skate is fully charged, which is so good to see. If you hope to sit back and observe, you are probably in the wrong place. Dubbed Surf Rock, Blaike Murphy is not a stagnant performer. He is an all-or-nothing, true entertainer, and an equally a good dude.Β Β Catching Murphy briefly, we discuss the challenge to punters due to the cost of living. Although accurate, Murphy takes it in his stride. The money would help, but his passion prevails. In appreciation, I purchase a T-shirt from the merch stand.
A small but lively pit, accommodating around ten people, opens up in this small venue, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with alcohol and good vibes. Murphy actively engages with the crowd, making the festivities even more enjoyable. It appears to be a dream come true for him. As a tip for young players, I recommend listening to Cheap-Skateβs βDemons (Dbtedd Remix)β, a perfect tune for chilling out.
Although Cheap-Skate is relatively new to the Australian music scene, big things are ahead. Murphyβs stage presentation packs a punch, and this release party is no different. βCELLPHONEβ is described as βexploring themes of coming of age, the fear of death, and the struggle of pursuing dreams while neglecting relationships. The title “CELLPHONE” symbolises my dependence on technology.β So, the themes are relatable if you listen closely to the lyrics. Take it further with a cleverly creative music video in which pursuing your dreams takes a tragic turn. As a kid of the MTV generation, I froth at the thought of a well-structured music video, which I feel Murphy has managed with βCELLPHONEβ It adds value and presents his musical mission well.
Cheap-Skate is on the rise, featuring high-energy shows and intense lyrics; and was absolute fire. Supported by Wasted Years, Terra Rouge, and Okay Dane, they showcased their unique musical styles. Terra Rouge brought a bluesy touch, while Okay Dane delivered smooth and profound melodies. Cheap-Skate prevailed with their live performance, which was electrifying and inspiring.Β “CELLPHONE” is an excellent track that explores themes of youth and chasing dreams. Despite the challenges, Murphy’s passion is evident. Get behind young musicians and check out Cheap-Skate for freaking awesome music.
