Angel Science, an Alberta underground producer of groovy tribal techno, has released the EP Terranean on the newish Calgary-based dub techno record label Echo Locations.

The EP includes 3 original tracks: “Lil Drummer”, “Bluezone”, and the title track “Terranean”. The tracks are a cohesive package of straight ahead and technically sound techno, with satisfying kicks as their bedrock. The tracks are punctuated with stabby, little treble sounds that carve out sparse melodies and rhythms.

Of the three tracks, “Terranean” is the most interesting as it crawls beyond the enjoyable minimalism of the first two tracks to add additional depth and musical points of interest. Toronto’s Sergio SP, a fixture of the local scene, builds on this and adds some lushness and heft in his remix of this track.

This EP is a building block for both artist and label to grow in Calgary but importantly to be heard well beyond these formative confines and into the broader world.
