It is time for Edmonton, AB duo Jed and the Valentine (Jonah Morris and Maria Khaner) to reach a much-deserved wider audience with their debut album Awake! Not that both didn’t have previous experience as solo singer-songwriters before they started working together for some two years now.

Yet whatever that solo experience was and the fact that they set up the recording studio in their bedroom to record this album, it seems that during this period they have found some almost perfect synergy to record these nine songs. And it is nine songs that brim with personal energy, musical savvy rooted in their surroundings and all things roots music to which they have given their dual personal touch.

It is all subtle songwriting, subdued instrumentation and some truly brilliant dual harmonies and solo vocals that dominate this set, that doesn’t lack in any respect, including the lyrics.

Have we heard it all before? Yes and no, as Jed and the Valentine have found that specific sound within a genre many have taken on.
