The music industry is, as many know, a hard one to gain notoriety in. While some bands can make it to insane amounts of fame, there are some bands that have fans in a ‘medium’ level. In the rock and metal genres in particular, fans of these types of bands are some of the most dedicated fans ever. The bands often continue for the sake of these fans and the music, and Sevendust is one of those groups. These hard rock and nu metal endurers have returned after a three-year break to release their newest album, ONE.
ONE is a project that has a lot of love poured into it. “Threshold” is a prime example of this, with its emotionally charged lyrics that fit perfectly with its intense and gripping instrumentals. Morgan Rose’s drums in particular make this track very fun and fierce. “Bright Side” is another gem from this album that stands out amongst the tracklist. Clint Lowery’s riffs throughout the song are simple and sweet, however, they compliment the feel of the song and bring the song to another level. “Is This the Real You” is perhaps the greatest display of the band’s creativity on this album. The vocals from Lajon Witherspoon are strong, and the use of backing vocals makes his voice stand out that much more. The instrumentals then all come together with the vocals to create a catchy song that listeners will find themselves singing along to.
The only thing that might bring this album down for some is that the tracks don’t feel like they necessarily fit together. “We Won” in particular is a great song on its own but gets lost amongst the tracks before and after because the mood change feels a bit too fast.
Overall, this album is amazing. If a listener enjoys heavier rock, or nu metal, this is definitely the album to be checking out. There’s a lot of variety on this tracklist for different tempos, moods, and even for subgenres. Everyone will find at least a single track that they enjoy.
