URSA MAJOR REVELATION – “BIG BABY”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
For 2 years, Los Angeles-based artist Ursula Rose lived with her musician boyfriend (Dylan Rau of Bear Hands) in their Echo Park hobbit-hole apartment. During that time, she was asked to perform typical “girlfriend-of-musician” duties such as listening to his various works in progress on repeat, staying awake on Ambien while attempting to write the “perfect hook,” and packing bong loads whilst prancing around their living room in an actual cheerleader costume whenever hope felt lost. Throughout that period she started to identify as a hottie-muse type but also began to see herself as an actual musician/songwriter. Eventually some of her lyrics, melodies, and even vocal recordings made their way onto Bear Hands’ fourth album Fake Tunes. Ursula co-wrote and sang the hook on Bear Hands’ single “Blue Lips” which came out in 2019, charted on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart, and amassed more than three million streams on Spotify alone.
Now, Ursula Rose and Dylan Rau have joined forces in the creation of their own electro-pop project together: Ursa Major Revelation. On October 17, the pair will share their debut EP, Big Baby, which was recently introduced with the release of a first cut entitled “Tar Pits,” (alongside an accompanying self-directed video). Now, the duo returns the EP’s second single and title track, “Big Baby.”
As Ursa wrote on the track:
“I was engaged to be married by the time I turned 16. Like a natural disaster, this relationship started abruptly and no one in my life saw it coming. I loved him out of fear and I followed him like he was my cult leader. I spent so much time listening to his screaming that I forgot the sound of my own voice. This song is the wakeup call that I wish I could’ve heard at the time and it’s a reminder to never date a baby.”
Speaking on their forthcoming EP, Ursa continued:
“By the time I turned 30, I had a major revelation. I looked back on my life and saw a map. My life was a map of the men I have loved. Some of them were pretty cool, others less so. I let the map guide me through the creation of three songs, one for each of the major loves of my life.
Dylan Rau made these instrumentals in various west coast closets and I wrote most of the vocals at an Airbnb in Joshua Tree. Additional recording was completed at a fishing cabin on the Oregon Coast. The songs feature production and mixing from dear friend and colleague Chris Chu (The Morning Benders, Pop ETC). Original artwork for each single by my grandmother Sara January Price.”
Stay tuned for Ursa Major Revelation’s forthcoming EP, Big Baby, coming soon.
