SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: SEVENDUST – TRUTH KILLER

Sevendust

Sevendust
Truth Killer
Napalm Records

Sevendust has always burned along in its own lane, never disappointing. They’re known for giving us unpredictable riffs and soothing yet heavy sounds, meanwhile veering off just a little to give us something unexpected by testing the waters with new sounds. This has always worked well for them, and their 14th studio album Truth Killer, is no exception. 2020’s Blood & Stone was a tough act to follow, but they did it, and they did it well.

The album opens with a much softer side of Sevendust “I Might Let the Devil Win”, showing vocalist Lajon Witherspoon’s emotional side with powerful lyrics and a whisper just before punching out a compelling bridge. “Everything” is both heavy and familiar, with a prominent chorus that lyrically speaks like an inner voice. The video shows all members of Sevendust performing the song with lead guitarist Clint Lowery and drummer Morgan Rose adding some explosive backing vocals of their own to complement Witherspoon’s signature lead vocals and featuring some awesome guitar work from Lowery and rhythm guitarist John Connelly as well as bassist Vince Hornsby. You see the album’s cover art is brought to life in the video.

The first song they gave us, which is the album closer, is “Fence” and it is classic Sevendust all the way with Rose pounding away on the drums and Witherspoon’s familiar powerful voice. The accompanying video is a claymation “Celebrity Death Match type video that is about a chemical spill that turns everyone into Zombies, which seems kind of ironic given Sevendust’s longevity.

Sevendust is set to head out to support the album with Static X and Dope on the Machine Killer tour this fall.

About the Author
Melinda Welsh
Melinda is a music enthusiast from the US who grew up on vinyl in the 70s and 80s. She's a lover of all genres, but rock/metal runs through her veins. Music is always in the background and in her head. Unfortunately, she has to have a "regular 8-5" job since "Professional Concert Go-er" doesn't pay the bills. Her bliss would be to follow more musicians and bands than "People she may know" on social media. Her ultimate long term goal is to be the old lady just enjoying the show down in front at the barricades at live shows. Her favorite quote is "Where words fail, music speaks".
