Mother Tongues
Love In A Vicious Way
Wavy Haze Records
Canadian band Mother Tongues has released their debut album,Β Love In A Vicious Way.Β It is genre-defying, unique, poetic, exciting and vibrant.
The debut album by Mother Tongues is a cornucopia of sounds. They draw inspiration from techno, industrial, dream pop, alternative, experimental, psychedelia, big beat, hip hop, soft rock and many more and turn it into something surreal and original. βDrip Dripβ is a great example of this. Its slow and haunting guitar melody reminiscent of Mazzy Star and the Trent Reznor-like ambient effects make for an amazing song. The futuristic cyberpunk sound of tracks like βLove In A Vicious Wayβ makes it feel retro and ahead of its time.
βA Heart Beatingβ is one of the standout tracks. The dreamy and hypnotic guitars are perfectly mixed with the electronica sound, giving it a lullaby or dream-like feeling. It is very atmospheric, has a hint of The Cure, and has beautiful vocals that get stuck in your head. βDance In The Darkβ is another highlight. The opening guitar riffs are loud, booming, and thunderous and combine nicely with the synths. The gloomy and intimate lyrics are heartbreaking and honest and convey a deep sense of loneliness. βWorm Dayβ has the most interesting instrumentation from the album. It has a strange, somewhat creepy, dissonant opening instrumentation, but it sounds so good.
Vocally and lyrically, the album is astonishing. Lukas Cheung and Charise Aragoza are breathtaking vocally. The lyrics are incredibly poetic, insightful, and catchy.
Overall,Β Love In A Vicious WayΒ is one of the best debut albums of 2023.
