San Francisco’s Moby Grape released their debut, self-titled album in 1967. They had formed in 1966, and what made the band unusual was that all five members, at that time, sang lead and wrote songs for the album. The album did very well, as did their second album Wow/Grape Jam. They have had many member changes, but Peter Lewis, one of the founding members, has been a fairly consistent member.
Imagination is his new solo album. There are many styles and arrangements throughout the ten songs. The album keeps the listener focused on the music and wondering what is coming next.
Lewis uses his vocals as an instrument, which makes for fascinating listening. “Frank Zappa’s Ghost” is a good example. In this jazz-infused track, he growls and yells his way through an incredible tribute to Zappa. He even included “The Rite Of Spring”, which is something which Zappa would approve of. It is however different from the opening track, “Just Like Sunshine”, which is much more straightforward pop rock. Here he sings it very beautifully. This is followed by the very bluesy “Without You”. His guitar is stylish as are his vocals, much calmer and smoother.
There are other genres here as well, including a flamenco-influenced song. “The Path Of Least Resistance” sounds more celebratory than depressing. It is a great rocker, and should be a staple on rock radio. The title track is another great song that faces the big questions about life.
The final track, “Saying Goodbye”, is jazzier. Here, Lewis’s voice is perfect for the style. There is so much variety on the album, and yet, everything comes together to make this a very strong, cohesive, and consistent album. The listener really benefits if you lay down, turn down the lights, and listen to this from beginning to end.
Moby Grape and Lewis fans will love this album, and it may even earn Lewis some new fans.
