If there’s an artist who can come up with a soundtrack for a neo-Western film today, Kevin Morby might not be the usual choice, but just might be a great one. Scott McGehee and David Siegel who wrote, produced, and directed Montana Story, one such film, obviously didn’t want the soundtrack in the hands of your usual L.A. soundtrack composers, but somebody who can come up with often wistful and evocative music, something that can fit their images.

Their choice came up to Kevin Morby, a singer-songwriter that can definitely fit the bill, and without seeing the movie and listening to Morby’s Music From Montana Story, it just sounds that they made and excellent decision.

Morby is known for his specific, intriguing vocals, something you get here only once, on the closing “Dance With Me Child” and “Like A Flower,” unless you include his backing of Waxahatchee on equally beautiful “One Paper Kid”.

But beauty is all over this excruciatingly brief soundtrack that is otherwise completed with mostly brief instrumentals that, with exceptions, last less than a minute. Still, that was enough for Morby to prove that he is one of the best singer-songwriters around today, who obviously can write good soundtracks too.
