SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: EV BIRD – PUFF PIECE

Ev Bird

Ev Bird
Puff Piece
Royal Mountain Records

If you are an artist/musician based in Montreal, you may be tempted to retreat indoors when the winter takes its hold. One of those is take an extensive listen to your record collection, something that will certainly have a great influence on what kind of music you will come up with yourself.

Ev Bird is one of such musicians, and on the evidence of Puff Piece, his latest achingly brief (under 20 mins.) mini album, his collection is full of jazz, rock, and soul and any other connected genre, on the line of the likes of Steely Dan, Chicago’s Sea & Cake or Aluminum Group, and even jazzy hip hop.

Now, turning that into something of your own is quite a daunting task, and it does not only involve a hefty dose of skill, knowledge and experience, but also inventiveness and imagination so to be able to turn it into something distinctive.

Luckily for Bird, it seems he possesses all of the above, as the seven tracks here are brimming with some exquisite, cool jazzy vibes, that easily flow from soul into rock and jazz and back, producing what you can really and truly dub as chill music.

by Ljubinko Zivkovic on September 4, 2026
