Your Crush

Even the most hardened fans of what they consider complex music have some sort of a soft spot for some sort of, what some would call ‘pop confection.’ It could be anything – from an old Motown Supremes track or… Taylor Swift.
The thing is, that many ‘complex’ fans forget that coming up with a good, catchy, listenable pop track is often harder to come up with than a complex avant-garde composition – you have so many more rules and formats to abide by and it still has to sound good in the end. And both The Supremes and Taylor Swift can boast with some great pop stuff in their own right.
Mentioning Ms. Swift, we actually come up to the Hawaii duo Your Crush and their latest EP, Strawberry Sheets. Yan and Khan are two Asian Americans that obviously like that dreamy sort of pop that on the evidence of the five tracks here like their dreamy stuff on a sweeter side, but luckily enough don’t go beyond two (and rarely three) lumps of sugar in their musical tea/coffee. And frankly, it works! It is immaculately put together, the vocals, arrangements production are set to the best effect.
Pop confection? Sure, but it is pop confection that works and that nobody will refuse, with the title tracks being quite a standout.
