SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: SKIPPING STONE – MONSTERS OF MEN

Skipping Stone

SKIPPING STONE
MONSTERS OF MEN
INDEPENDENT

The Louisville, Kentucky hard rock band Skipping Stone have released their seven-track EP, Monsters Of Men.

It opens up with a little over a minute of a suspenseful instrumental intro, letting you know something is about to happen. When “Monster” starts, you hear a beautiful guitar intro giving a nice buildup.  Frontman Jordan Carlson’s vocals put together with guitarist Thomas Hicks’ growly vocals bring it up to another level as Jose Gonzalez’s drum solos throb all the way into the fierce ending. Jordan’s delivery of the intense, dark lyrics is flawless. Midway through, the heavy energy in “Never Die” is relentless with great guitar riffs, and again the band shows their talents. The fantastic guitar solos paired perfectly with the pulsating drums could easily keep a crowd engaged and could make it a favorite. And what good is rock ‘n’ roll without a song about sex? “CMD (Call Me Daddy)”, a catchy hookup type song, lacks the ferocity of the rest of the tracks but still fits with the rest of the tracks. It’s catchy, it’s sexy and it ends with a female mocking “Really?/That’s it?/3 and a half minutes?” They settle down and wrap things up with the acoustic leading closer “Red”. You can definitely feel an alternative vibe in this one, but it works. Every track flows nicely together, and the potential of these guys can really be felt throughout

About the Author
Melinda Welsh
Melinda is a music enthusiast from the US who grew up on vinyl in the 70s and 80s. She's a lover of all genres, but rock/metal runs through her veins. Music is always in the background and in her head. Unfortunately, she has to have a "regular 8-5" job since "Professional Concert Go-er" doesn't pay the bills. Her bliss would be to follow more musicians and bands than "People she may know" on social media. Her ultimate long term goal is to be the old lady just enjoying the show down in front at the barricades at live shows. Her favorite quote is "Where words fail, music speaks".
