SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: TALL FOLK – WISER

Tall Folk

Tall Folk
Wiser
Independent

Having a good sense of humor in any kind of music, even more so in melancholy-oriented folk/roots genres certainly can further artists’ cause: “Lara is from a long line of long legs. Jack is an extension of generations of long necks…”

So starts the description of who they are by Dunedin, New Zealand duo Tall Folk, Lara Robertson and Jack Ringhand, as an introduction to their debut full-length album Wiser.

What the Tall Folk have in front of them could be a tall order – bring something personal to the world of the expansive term of Americana music, and by the quality of their songwriting, playing and singing, (with a bit of help of some quite adept musicians) they seemingly do that with ease and grace. And a bit of humour to make things even more palpable.

One of the reasons the duo’s Americana certainly works might lie in the fact that Ringhand is an American expatriate, but being American didn’t help some other artists playing that kind of music.

What they and the musicians supporting them have is quite a special synergy that lifts their music quite above your ‘regular’ Americana. Hopefully, even better things will come from Tall Folks, their long legs and necks.
