Deine Lakaien
Dual
Prophecy Productions

Germany’s avant-garde darkwave duo Deine Lakaien has released its 10th full-length studio album, Dual. The double-length collection consists of one disc of cover versions the pair, made up of singer Alexander Veljanov and composer Ernst Horn, reveres as inspirational and another comprised of ‘replies’ to these personally influential tracks.
My favourite part about the album is the emotive, melancholic feel of some of the tunes and Veljanov’s vocals, which were, on many tracks, perfectly complemented by the melody.
Standouts include “Snow”, “Because the Night” (although I’m not sure how this one, a cover of the Patti Smith/Bruce Springsteen classic, couldn’t be because it’s just a great song to begin with), and “My December”. I also enjoyed “The Walk”, a track borrowed from The Cure, especially the vocals and the echo effect used in parts.
Adding a modern twist on the covers to satisfy their ‘love of folkish harmonies and melodies’ (per composer Horn) makes this album worth any fan of the band’s time to check out.
