Nashville is changing. No, it isn’t the quality of musicianship. Whether you like it or not, the Nashville sound is one of the best around. It is the change that spells diversification, though it could be rock, or pop, or anything else.

Most of those trends are connected to a slew of new, independent artists who have an open mind and are not afraid to implement new things into their music. Based on her Dark River album, you can count Lydia Luce into that group.

Whether it is going down the singer/songwriter road of “Tangled Love,” rocking stuff of “Never Been Good,” pop-leanings of “Maybe in Time” or country sound closer to the heart of Nashville of “Leave Me Empty,” you’ve practically got it all here.

The composition and the musicianship here are almost perfection. Luce is obviously going down a similar road as artists such as Kacey Musgraves, that seem to abide by the motto “if it sounds good, why not?” Actually, the string arrangements throughout the album might actually be that grain of salt on the album that will give Luce the big break she deserves.
