SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: COCO REILLY – COCO REILLY

Coco Reilly

The number of current artists trying to channel music from the bygone years of rock grows by the day. In most cases, they try to mimic certain genre or genres concentrating more on style than substance. Of course, they do it with more or less success.

Nothing wrong with that whatsoever, often we need to be reminded of a good memory. Rarely do they actually try to combine that style (done well) with some other substance. Enter Coco Reilly, L.A. composer, multi-instrumentalist and singer, who so far has concentrated working on film music. Her self-titled debut solo album, which was actually made in Iceland, where Reilly is located at present, and attempts to do exactly that – combine ‘60s pop genres with her look at ” the meaning of truth, both personal and political,” as she puts it.

And she passes the test with flying colours, on both accounts. The moment lofty-titled “The Truth Will Always Find A Way” opens the album with its Phil Spector-ish recreations filtered through Marc Bolan at his best, you immediately know you are in for an excellent musical experience.

Reilly obviously knows exactly why she placed each and every note at a certain point, something that comes from working on film music and doing your musical research for a purpose. Her lyrics, at the same time, fit into the music perfectly, as Reilly puts it, commenting on the opener, it is a song “for those who are fighting for truth: this is a message of support and encouragement”. “For those who have been distorting the truth: it is a reminder that the truth finds everyone, and your timer will run out.”  And she proves it, throughout the album.
