SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: DEX WOLFE – LIGHTNESS

Usually, there is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde side to musical polymaths. They are certainly extremely talented people, but often, with all their abilities, they tend, well, to show off.

Minneapolis artist Dex Wolf, is one such polymath, but on the evidence of his four-track EP ‘Lightness,’ his evil, show-off side is yet to be seen. You see, it is only four tracks, but his brief musical notes conjuring all the better sides of David Byrne, Sparklehorse, and Sufjan Stevens work some real polymath magic.

Even there, though, Wolfe doesn’t really do all by himself but uses other talent where he thought they will do a better job. It is certainly a good move, as all four tracks present complex and intricate music that still at no point moves into excess and remains an engaging listen, even though “Highly Likely” very likely verges towards prog – the good side of it.

If these four tracks are any indicator of what is to come on the album proper Wolf is currently working on, we are in for a real musical treat. Repeat button is on.
