SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: BETTY MOON – TRANSLUCENT

Betty Moon

Betty Moon
Translucent
Evolver Music

Betty Moon has led a very creative, and highly productive, musical career.  Before her major label album debut for A&M Records in 1990, she was also the frontwoman for cutting-edge Toronto indie rock band Bambi. Her latest release is the shimmering six-song EPTranslucent, and as one would expect, it’s an infectious groove-infused disc that certainly won’t disappoint her huge fan base.

The songwriting and vocals on Translucent showcase Moon at her absolute finest, and this is no more evident than in the terrific midtempo ballad “All He Is,” which may be one of her best songs to date. Her rapid-fire Gatling gun vocal delivery on this particular track is worth the price of admission alone, and is backed up by an infectious, dreamlike, irresistible groove.

Other key cuts on the six-track EP include the introspective “Monsters In My Head,” the reflective and highly relatable disappointment of “Did It For Nothing”, and the catchy upbeat lead single, “Don’t Stop Now” (“Dead Out Of Love”).

As usual, a new Betty Moon record is full of pleasant surprises, but with Translucent, she takes things to a whole new level.
