Born Ruffians
Juice
Wavy Haze Records
In the world of indie rock, Born Ruffians are a well established act with over 15 years together, and the trio are nothing if not regular, producing a new album every second year. They have recently set up their own record label, Wavy Haze Records, in order to sell their own material directly, and so their independent credentials are as strong as they come.
With the album itself timing in at just under half an hour, there is almost a hurried urgency through the tracks. The music is melodic, the instruments varied, with great sax work on βI Fall in Love Every Nightβ and the bass of Mitch DeRosier being solid in the mix throughout. A quibble would be that the vocals appear to be turned down in the mix, and sometimes this makes them clouded by the instrumentation.
Two favourites of mine were βDedicationβ and βThe Poet (Canβt Jam)β, as they both have that attitude to climb the mountain that Born Ruffians have in patches. The band is no one trick pony, there is subtle variation in the music, a really cool kiss delivered on the end track βWavy Haze.β
I liked the album. Born Ruffians deliver a very pleasing piece that will keep their fans happy.
