SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: THE BOMBPOPS – DEATH IN VENICE BEACH

The Bombpops

The Bombpops
Death In Venice Beach
Fat Wreck Chords

This is a band who absolutely have found their moment. Check out the promotional poster  for “Zero Remorse” and you will see a band that is ready to reach a far greater audience. Putting forward a blend of hard-edged melodic punk, the drive and desire inherent in this album really deserve a market, and if you are sitting at home in this current tragic time, then you could do a whole lot worse than support this band.

Frankly, if you are someone who likes catchy hooks, guitar-driven licks and a fast, punky melody then you will love this. The lyrics are intelligent, and the songs are in a traditional verse, hook, chorus format. It is brief, running in at just over half an hour, but it reminds one of a band absolutely knocking at the door of stardom, ready for their time. The tracks burst onto the speakers and running at around two minutes per track leave in equal hurry, but a great firework doesn’t always need long to impress.

Standout tracks come thick and fast, but “Dearly Departed” and “Zero Remorse” are certainly most notable.

We must remember that for many bands we have a time of crisis, bands outside the legends require tours to build up support and gain an audience base and income.

Bombpops are releasing a class album with no tour to support it, and we must download a song or buy the album to keep music live and happening.

“Notre Dame” will give one a good feel of the band live. The group has had a few lineup changes but the sense of sheer fun and comfort in them mark this album out. A personal favourite is “Sad to Me”, as it reminds of early Blondie. It is driving music on an open road with the roof down and the speakers up to the max.

Big Guitars, pounding drums, big harmonies and a sense of humour mark out this band. It’s one of the albums of the year and can blast its way through the troubles of 2020 by setting the “House on Fire”.
