SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: CHARLOTTE CORNFIELD – IN MY CORNER

Charlotte Cornfield

Charlotte Cornfield
In My Corner
Next Door Records

Charlotte Cornfield has delivered a four-track EP, In My Corner, a new offering that includes two covers and two original numbers for her fans seeking some new material.

Lucinda Williams’ “Fruits of My Labour” is sombre, and reminiscent of Tanita Tikaumm. Here Cornfield keeps stead control of the lyrics which come to the fore. Yo La Tengo’s “You Can Have It All” is lighter, almost touching on the popular, with a catchy beat and easy lyric. The covers serve to create the feel of the EP and the new versions breathe a life into the older tunes.

As for the originals, the standout is the title track and lead single, “In My Corner”, a song that talks about life on the road and being there for others. It is about chance encounters and being a part of the landscape, where we never know who may be with us the next day.

“Upstate” is a sparse end to the EP, a love song stripped to the basics.

With Charlotte Cornfeld, the music connects without ever trying to change the world; hers are approachable folk tunes that would connect well to an intimate audience, and hearing the songs in your room creates the space that Cornfield seeks. Her voice is emotional and conveys the lyrical content perfectly, it is folk in the old style and for those who like traditional folk music this EP will please.
