SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: GISUN – FIN

Gisun

Gisun
Fin
Independent

Fin is the third E.P. from Vancouver-based Gisun. Since 2017, Gisun has been releasing EPs consistently and building an audience, and this is perhaps her best work yet. Here, rhythm and blues mixes with jazz, pop and world music. The end result is a unique blend of music which is rather pleasing to the ear.

The notes meld into each other and the effect on the listener is a calming, relaxing vibe. The songs are not over-produced and sparse enough to keep things very interesting. She also collaborates with Toronto-based artist, Estyr on the beautiful “Step Away”.

Lyrically, the songs read almost like love sonnets of long ago. “Wrong timing never felt so right for my old soul”, Gisun sings in the opening track, “Never Met”. It sets the tone. These are wonderful lyrics that fit the music perfectly. The final track of the far too short three-song EP is sung in Spanish, and it is a stunning closing song.

Gisun is able to mix her Uruguayan background with various forms of music. The end result is nothing short of spectacular. Fin usually means end or ending. I hope that this is not the end, and there is much more stunning music to come from this very talented artist.

About the Author
Aaron Badgley
Born and raised in Whitby, Aaron discovered music through his love of The Beatles. This led to a career in radio, writing for various publications, and ultimately a radio show about The Beatles (Beatles Universe), which ran for over four years. When not immersed in music, Aaron enjoys spending time with the loves of his life -- his wife Andrea, and daughters Emily and Linda (all of whom have an intense love of music too).
