SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: GEORGIA – SEEKING THRILLS

Georgia

Georgia
Seeking Thrills
Domino

After four long years, Georgia is back with their highly anticipated sophomore record, Seeking thrills. London native Georgia Barnes has put together what is almost sure-to-be one of the most downright fun albums of 2020 – think modern pop sound of Ellie Goulding crossed with ‘80s Madonna’s synthpop sound.

The first two lead singles, “Started Out” and “About Work The Dancefloor” are two tracks that are guaranteed to make you at least tap along to the beat, and in my case dance around my room like a madman.

Georgia Barnes began her musical career as a drummer working with English artists Kwes and Kate Tempest. Her drum-first mentality creates the exuberant percussive nature of the whole album. As skilled as she is with the drums, one could argue that the vocals are really what separates Seeking Thrills from her past work. Her vocals are noticeable higher in the mix in this record and she just takes more risks. In return, the album is simply more impressive. Listeners are subjected to so many different pleasing synths and sound combinations, it just adds to the fun of the music.

This album does run out of steam a bit towards the end. From “Ray Guns” to the end of the album, listeners may give in to listener fatigue. All the sounds and beats start blending together.

Overall, this record is just fun. I’m not one for using simple words like “fun” to describe an album but there’s no more suiting adjective to explain the feeling of Seeking Thrills. Towards the end, things start to blend together, but overall this is an album that one could play start to finish in a party setting and no one would mind.
