Coco Love Alcorn has been around for a while, and if you haven’t heard of her, you might want to take notice. She has an incredibly versatile voice which you might want to check out on one of her previous four albums.

Nothing much has changed here on Rebirth, her fifth and most recent album. Van Alcorn’s vocals dazzle in all their glory, from the opening of the gospel sounds of “Rebirth”, to the closing of “This Little Light Of Mine”.

But if gospel music is not your thing and you are under the impression that it is the only thing you will hear on this album, you would certainly be mistaken, and would be missing some slick, well-greased old time soul, as on “Ain’t No Friend” or “Save Me, some slick, well-greased new time soul as on “Noughatty Centre”, or “Satisfied”. There is also some excellent singer/songwriter material here on “A Song To Sing” and “Beautiful Mess”.

Throughout, Van Alcorn’s vocals shine and seem adaptable to almost any kind of a song thrown her way, and it is all done with quiet and confident assurance, with no indication that it is all geared towards just pleasing a wider audience.

Is Rebirth anything shatteringly new? No, not really. But then, there are those moments you want something that is very familiar, assured, and yes, ‘secure’. and that is exactly what Coco Love Alcorn and Rebirth offer. A worthy listen.
