SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: LAKES – THE CONSTANCE LP

Lakes

Lakes
The Constance LP
Independent

Wedged somewhere between mid-western emo and alternative indie, Watford sextet Lakes is a band anyone who went to Warped Tour or Boston Calling should listen to. Producing their own 10-part music video series and having played in pubs all through Watford, Lakes’ new LP The Constance is a one-of-a-kind album to not miss out on this summer.

Kicking off the LP with the track “Constance”, listeners at first think they’re listening to a happy, boppy Owl City-like indie tune to wash their worries away — that is, until you get a taste of the longing pop punk vocals and realize this song is about getting out of a terrible relationship. Not to mention, the music video for “Constance” has a surprising plot twist at the end, where vocalist Sam Neale’s reaction to close the scene beautifully marries impulse with despair.

“Lucerne” is another standout track on the album, with heart tugging lyrics, reminiscent math guitar riffs and just a taste of twinkling glockenspiel. Lakes then craftily twists Sam Neale’s and Roberto Cappellina’s vocals simultaneously in the track, setting the lyrical scene of two lovers talking into the night.

The Story So Far meets Of Monsters and Men, Lakes perfectly mixes “I hate this town” with twinkling glockenspiel and math-like guitar riffs. Lakes is a band that isn’t afraid to mix things up in their own distinctive way, and with that in mind I can’t wait to see what story the rest of the music videos have to tell.
