Evi Vine
Black // Light // White // Dark
Solemn Wave Records
Ethereal is a label tacked onto Evi Vine quite often. Yes, she does have an ethereal quality about her but on her new album there are so many more layers than that. She has come into her own with this, her third album. It broods, it rocks, it weeps, it conveys a maturity and depth unseen in so many albums that try hard to be βdeepβ.
She has enlisted some amazing musicians to assist her as well. Opening track βI Am the Wavesβ features Martyn Barker of Shriekback (amongst others) and Geraldine Swayne of Faust. Lead single, βSabbathβ features a one-two punch of Simon Gallup of The Cure on bass and Peter Yates formerly of Fields of the Nephilim and Rubicon on guitar.
A serious early contender for album of the year, this has it all. There is so much crossover potential from Goth to Dreampop, singer-songwriter to supergroup (given the caliber of assistance). She lets the notes do as much talking as her emotional lyrics. She lets noise pervade as much as the silence. Her craft is truly beyond anything that words can try to convey.
