Sammy Johnson
Moonlight Lovers
Mensch House Records
Sammy Johnsonβs new EP, Moonlight Lovers, is a mixture of Reggae and R&B, and evokes the feeling of relaxing on the beach. Half Australian and half Polynesian, Johnson connected with his Polynesian roots through this EP. He explains that, βI looked more Polynesian but that was the extent of my knowledge, until one day a friend of mine gave me an album that basically opened me up to a whole world of music and culture I never knew. The album was Gratitude by Fijiβ.
Singing about unrequited love in the standout song, βA Dozen Rosesβ, Johnson continuously charms the listener with his smooth and sultry voice. The EP feels effortless, even in moments with depressing topics like pining over an uninterested crush. Musically there is a lot going on, but it plays out like a perfectly blended symphony. Moonlight Lovers is filled with natural vocals and a sound that just makes you want to dance.
On Moonlight Lovers, Johnson explores his identity and shares music that touches his soul. He says that it is his favourite of his work because βfrom concept to finish I was able to create exactly what I had dreamed of doingβ.
