SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: DEATHLIST – FUN

Deathlist

Deathlist
Fun
XRAY Records

Energetic, quick, and the perfect soundtrack to a radical summer. Deathlist’s Fun is like a warm late night car ride: full of secrets and moody tones. Deathlist (aka Jenny Logan) does a great job wearing her influences on her sleeve while providing a refreshing sound combination of synth-grunge-emo-punk-pop. Through tracks like “Want It” and “Until You’re Mine” Logan showcases driving beats and haunting melodies.

From beginning to end on this 33-minute album, the theme remains the same: a lone artist coping with the death of a friend. This heart-wrenchingly honest album utilizes sound to create an intimate conversation between listener and performer.

Representing her city of Portland well, Logan’s career screams of a woman who works hard. Currently she plays in the bands Loveboys, Miss Rayon, and Sunbathe. These bands range from grunge to pop to post-punk, and all these sounds can be heard throughout Fun.

The production is simple, to the point and direct. The mix is dense and brooding, with hints of space throughout. This is a satisfying combination with Logan’s vocals. The track listing is well thought-out with the ending track being an almost 7-minute jam, “Window”, that feels cathartic. Listening to this concise album out of order would be an absolute shame. Heed this warning and listen to in one sitting; preferably on a late night, in an old car, with a good friend.
