SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: CRAIG FINN & KEVIN DEVINE – DEVINYL SPLITS NO. 7

Craig Finn & Kevin Devine

Craig Finn & Kevin Devine
Devinyl Splits No. 7
Bad Timing Records/Devinyl Records

Kevin Devine has been doing an interesting series of vinyl records called “Devinyl Splits.” These are a series where he pairs with an artist and records two songs, one on each side of a 7-inch vinyl single record. He recently released his newest installment to this collection along with Craig Finn. This is the first release for the Volume 2 edition of Devinyl Splits. This is a recording artist’s dream. It allows for Devine to experiment with various styles and not be stuck in what he typically releases.

“Galveston” is the first song on this release and is primarily by Craig Finn. It is an interesting song that tells the tale of going to Galveston, TX. There are some deeply powerful lyrics “Seems like the faith we attain/Is a function of how much we suffer” that are paired with some slightly comical ones that many males can attest to though: “The waitress keeps on making it weird/I wish she wouldn’t call me big brother.” The song doesn’t do anything to really push the envelope, but it’s a fun little jam. ‘Kuala Lumpur’ is where Kevin Devine takes more of the lead. It becomes more of an indie anthem than anything. It has a cool guitar layered effect with the rhythm guitar keeping a steady beat and the lead guitar sprinkling brightly throughout.

This is an interesting single split, but it doesn’t really make for anything life changing. It could all add up to be an interesting album once all the parts of Vol. 2 are complete.
