Album Review: Deerhoof – Breakup Song

On Deerhoof’s incredible 11th LP, Breakup Song, the band continues to push audio innovation to parts unknown. They remind me of Blonde Redhead and Stereo Lab in a perfect marriage. Satomi Matsuzaki’s sweet female lead vocals really make this band stand out from the pack. They have a modern New York, Garage Rock sound with tunes that are off the beaten path. This record is tones of fun to spin.

Oddball noises and sounds are thrown into songs like “Bad Kids To The Front,” “Flower” and various other songs, bringing and almost Residence-esque element to their catchy collection of great tunes. These intricacies give the band their own unique sounds, which seem to be a rarity for bands anymore. Sounds go as far out as heavy Industrial Electro-rock on the song “To Fly or Not to Fly,” moments like this are engaging and keep you guessing at what’s next. Standout tracks include “There’s That Grin,” “Zero Seconds Pause” and “Fete d’Adieu;” all danceable tunes with amazing grooves, beats and melodies perfect for cranking on your chosen audio playing apparatus.

Breakup Song is a breath of musical fresh air from Deerhoof, and is definitely worth picking up if you’re into obscure modern Indie Rock.
