Hannah Georgas’ voice is a force to be reckoned with; light and sweet like pixie sticks, it effortlessly carries tunes as if they were feathers floating on a breeze. The self-titled album, Hannah Georgas, is the Vancouver-based singer’s second full-length release. It marks Georgas’ departure from sweet folky goodness, and an entry into the world of danceable, electronic ditties. The beats are heavy, the synths are soaring, and the hooks are memorable and fun. This album definitely has some magical moments.

An instant crowd pleaser is the opening track, “Elephant.” From the very first chords of pulsating synthesizer, the listener is swept up and captivated. Chilling and beautiful, this tune tells the tale of a relationship ripping at the seams; the song’s intensity is addictive and demands multiple listens. Another toe-tapper is the notoriously catchy “Shortie;” danceable and cheeky, this song is nothing but fun. The rest of the album is well-balanced and enjoyable. Moments of youthful energy blend into heartfelt ballads, while Georgas’ intensity never seems to falter. Though in the end, there still seems to be something missing. In refining her sound and presenting a more polished package, it’s possible that Georgas has lost some of her edge. There is nothing wrong with the album, but there is nothing absolutely spectacular about it either. The record is a totally pleasant listen, but it won’t be making any year-end lists.
