SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: SABATON – LEGENDS

Sabaton

SABATON
LEGENDS
BETTER NOISE MUSIC

Some people stumble onto great music naturally. Some require a stray earworm from a passing car window as they munch on their street meat, tapping to Shazam.

Some let an unhinged streaming algorithm swallow them down a three-hour rabbit hole at midnight. Me? I waited for my own oldest kid to drag me by the earphone cords on to a power metal band I’d managed to blank out since the Y2K scare. When my oldest daughter excitedly told me she and her boyfriend were heading to see Sabaton in Toronto, I figured it was finally time to hear what all the fuss was about. I’d heard their name floating around for the last decade, but it turns out these Swedish guys have been rolling since 1999. When I saw that their eleventh album had dropped in October 2025, I realized I was dangerously late to the party, though as they say, “a sluggish arrival beats eternal disappearance.” Amiright???

SPILL FEATURE: WHERE HISTORY RESONATES – A CONVERSATION WITH PÄR SUNDSTRÖM OF SABATON ON COMPOSITION, COMMUNITY, AND HEAVY METAL’S FUTURE

When looking at Legends as a whole, critics might argue that the album plays it safe by sticking to Sabaton’s tried-and-true formula of driving guitar riffs, wall-of-sound choruses, and soaring solos. Yet that critique overlooks a vital pivot: by stepping away from their usual 20th-century battlefield logs, the band dives headfirst into premodern mythopoetics, constructing a much grander, antiquity-spanning canvas around ancient conquerors and strategists.

Sweeping across centuries of ancient sagas, Legends tackles a diverse pantheon of historical icons. Legends features exceptional musicianship from start to finish. It’s a well-balanced, remarkably accessible high-quality release that stands out for exploring the furthest historical depths the band has ever tackled. If you have an appetite for history, this release is an absolute listen, with a seamless blend of immersive education and epic power metal packed across 11 tracks. For a lesser band, an artistic triumph of this magnitude would serve as the definitive peak of their entire career. For Sabaton, it stands as simply another stellar addition to an already formidable catalog, leaving you eagerly anticipating which historical epoch they will conquer next.
