MASTODON w/ DEAFHEAVEN & ALCEST

The 2026 album Marrow Deep is Mastodon’s first album without guitarist and founding member Brent Hinds, and although his absence is felt, the record still steps it up a notch and pushes their energy to new levels. In support of the album, the Atlanta band swung by Rebel, with a great supporting cast in Alcest and Deafheaven.
Alcest took to the stage at 7 pm with a 40-min set of sprawling post-black-metal tracks including “Protection,” “Écailles de lune (Part II).” The hypnotic and airy guitar playing on this song is something to behold.
Deafheaven went on at 8 pm opening with “Doberman” and “Magnolia,” and continued to a play a set full of songs from their latest album Lonely People With Power. They played their most classic hit, “Dream House” before ending with the mesmerizing 7-min wall of sound “Winona.”

Mastodon got things going straight out of the gate at 9 pm with “Barbarians Blood,” “March of the Fire Ants,” and “Crystal Skull.
Halfway through the set, Baroness lead singer and guitarist John Baizley surprised the audience by joining the band on stage for “Snakes for Dinner,” staying with them for the remainder of the night.
The group played lots of songs off their new album including “Poisonous Weapons,” “In the Ruins,” and “Your Ghost Again.” Brann Dailor’s singing on the latter is haunting, while Nick Johnston’s guitar playing is brutally heavy, making for the perfect combination. They also played classics such as “Oblivion” and “The Czar” from the 2009 album Crack The Sky which absolutely killed.
They ended the set with the towering “Blood and Thunder” and afterwards Dailor remained on stage handing out drumstick and reminiscing on all the good times he had in Toronto in his younger years when he lived across the lake in Rochester, New York.
