Following the sharp-edged punch of their debut single “Say It!,” Montreal’s Taxi Girls return with “Secret Handshake”, a song that reveals a different side of the band ahead of the release of their debut album Static, due June 26 via Wild Honey Records in Europe and Stomp Records in Canada.

Where “Say It!” arrived with clenched fists and an unmistakable sense of purpose, “Secret Handshake” opens a more reflective window into the world of Static. Built around longing, affection, and the fragile rituals that bind people together, the song captures that peculiar moment when summer begins to slip away, but nobody is quite ready to let go.

Formed in 2022, Taxi Girls have quickly become one of the most compelling young bands to emerge from Montreal’s underground. Drawing equally from garage rock, punk, and power pop, their songs carry the energy of crowded basement shows while retaining an instinctive gift for melody. Across Static, that balance between urgency and vulnerability becomes one of the band’s defining characteristics, and nowhere is it more evident than on “Secret Handshake”.

Driven by chiming guitars, a restless rhythm section and the intertwined vocals of Jamie Radu and Vera, the track trades some of the band’s usual abrasion for warmth without sacrificing momentum. The result recalls the bittersweet immediacy of classic power pop filtered through the grit and spirit of contemporary garage punk.

Having already shared stages with NOBRO, NOFX, Lagwagon, The Hives, Billy Talent, and Pansy Division, while also earning support from Iggy Pop on BBC 6 Music, Taxi Girls arrive at Static with growing momentum and a rapidly expanding audience.

With “Secret Handshake”, they demonstrate that beneath the distortion and swagger lies a band equally capable of tenderness, nostalgia and emotional precision. It is a reminder that the most enduring songs often hide their strength in the smallest gestures.
