RETURNING HOME: THE MUSIC OF MARNIE WEBER
PHANTOM LIMB RECORDS

Wikipedia defines art rock as “ a subgenre of rock music that aims to separate the genre from popular entertainment, with the term typically being applied as the middle ground between mainstream and experimental rock.” You can always have variations added to this, but when you consider that the music of Marnie Weber is categorized as art rock, and on the evidence of her latest album, Returning Home: The Music of Marnie Weber, we just might stick to the above definition.
The reasons? Well, not only is Weber an established visual and conceptual artist, along with being a songwriter and musician, but as this compilation shows, she never stuck to conventional and standard, but veered through the darker realms between the early goth rock (she started recording back in the 70s) and all stages of Sonic Youth, with some great melodies always peeking out. It is great to be reminded of her excellent music output.
