SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: STRANGE PASSAGE – A FOLDED SKY

Strange Passage

STRANGE PASSAGE
A FOLDED SKY
MERITORIO RECORDS

Do you remember the heyday of the ‘80s guitar-driven indie rock where bands like R.E.M., Felt, The Feelies, The Church and the melody-oriented phase of Hüsker Dü were among those spearheading some great music?

Well, even if you don’t remember, but are longing for such a sound, New York/Boston quartet Strange Passage are here to revive, and eventually push forward, such music with their second album A Folded Sky.

You get those ringing, sometimes jangly, chiming guitars played with energy and panache, going into complex riffs along the way without turning things too technical and relying on good instinct and plenty of emotion. They make it sound fancy without trying too hard, with not so simple chord changes that seem to come oh-so naturally to these guys.

Have we heard it before? Sure, but then when it is good you simply want to hear that sound again, especially when it is so well done.
