THEO VANDENHOFF – “IN THE THROES OF LOVE”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
Acting as the title track to the second EP from Toronto based post-punk act Theo Vandenhoff, “In The Throes Of Love” began as a synthpop home demo, riffing on the arpeggiated theme from Haruomi Hosono’s ‘Sportsmen’. Vandenhoff’s lyrics depict someone falling deeply in love at the wrong time. Amid euphoric limerence, “Throes” wrestles with nearly inevitable heartbreak. Theo Vandenhoff’s partner, Ireland Egan, wrote and directed the accompanying video with a truly profound understanding of this song with Vandenhoff’s mainstay Nick Tiringer assisting in cinematography and colouring. The video tells the story of someone desperately seeking connection in uncertainty. Its imagery was heavily inspired by Stan Brakhage’s use of abstract visuals and light.
ARTIST QUOTE
“‘In The Throes Of Love’ paints the parallel melancholy of two people falling helplessly in love while knowing the full extent of the pain they are opening themselves up to. Knowing that a bitter end is more likely than an eternity, but letting the fire burn regardless of that.”
