SPUNSUGAR – “A FLICKER IN MY LIGHTS”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
Swedish three-piece Spunsugar are back in support of their sophomore album A Hole Forever with a third music video, dropping on the 27th March. The latest audiovisual effort is for “A Flicker In My Lights”, one of the standout album tracks from the album released back in November 2023.
This trilogy-completing video follows in the same DIY-vein as their previous flicks for singles ‘San Jose’ and ‘White Sneakers’, and is a perfect reflection of the track’s dark lyrical theme: hopelessness in watching the world burn in a capitalist flame. Flickers of oil and rubber, smoke, and big booming buildings symbolise the suffocation of hope in the modern world, and watching visions of a life go up in smoke.
Growing up as farmer offspring, bible belt kids of fundamentalists and trailer trash in small towns of Sweden, it’s understandable why the Malmö-based trio feel such strong emotions towards the damage fossil fuels have done to the world. This personal connection to issues is the driving force behind A Hole Forever. The album is a 10-track discussion of dense topics and exposure of the reality that is coming to
terms with internal shame, drenched in Spunsugar’s stunning combination of classic shoegaze elements and modern electronic, post-punk, and pop influence.
The “A Flicker In My Lights” video is artsy, vintage, and timeless, expertly depicting the doom and gloom of the surprise standout from their sophomore release. There is no better summary of the whole experience than these lyrics from the second verse: “My iridescent tears and my childhood fears are dripping with oil // Destruction and a dark thick smoke is all we’ve got from all our toil”.
Be sure to check out this latest offering from one of Sweden’s rising stars – the “A Flicker In My Lights” music video will be out on March 27th 2024, with their second album A Hole Forever available on all streaming services and 12” vinyl.
ARTIST QUOTE
“This video shares the same grainy, timeless flair but with a lot more despair in its theme. We felt a song about the hopelessness our generation feels about capitalism setting the world on fire should have a video depicting just that. It shows the contrast between how abstract constructs like identity and youth end up powerless against the capitalist machine.”
