BABY’S FIRST PISTOL – “HOLODOMOR”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
Baby’s First Pistol (B1P) has unleashed their latest single and video, “Holodomor”. This aggressive track showcases B1P’s energy, sound, and penchant for a chaotic musical style which falls somewhere between punk, post-punk, and post-hardcore.
Toronto quartet Baby’s First Pistol was formed out of a shared love for creating a unique, raw, and incendiary sound. Comprised of Alex Black (vocals), Matt KillBorn (guitar), Tim Nox (bass), and Aaron Matthews (drums), they combine hard-driving and fast-paced music with a rowdy live show. The band has earned a reputation for engaging audiences with their sound peppered with themes exploring absurdism, nihilism, and sardonic observations of social constructs like modern masculinity.
“Holodomor” is a song written by vocalist Alex Black, a Ukrainian refugee to Canada whose family left the collapsing USSR. In describing the premise, Alex Black states that “Holodomor, which occurred in Ukraine from 1932 to 1933, was a man-made famine orchestrated by the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin’s regime. It resulted in the deliberate starvation of millions of Ukrainians, leading to widespread suffering and death. This song acts as a juxtaposition between the famine and the current Russian regime’s invasion of Ukraine, which began in 2014, and which currently has members of my family fleeing shelling from Russian invaders.”
The music video was written, directed, and edited by B1P’s own Tim Nox and features members of the band over a war-themed diorama wearing masks representing aspects of the war including death, petulant and thin-skinned autocrats, submission of populations, and the political theatre at the expense of human life. The diorama, filled with toys, becomes life-like with bloodshed and ammunition, with the help of stop-motion filming.
As Alex indicates, “The video is unsettling and is an uncomfortable reminder that human life is still seen as disposable by those seeking power.”
“Holodomor” is now available for streaming on all major platforms, including Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music. Check the band socials to catch Baby’s First Pistol live and subscribe to the YouTube and Twitch channels to watch and interact with them during their regularly schedule livestreams.
