SUPERCHUNK RELEASES COVER OF THE MAGNETIC FIELDS’ CLASSIC “I DON’T WANT TO GET OVER YOU”
MERGE RECORDS
Superchunk is back from their 2025 US tour, and they’ve returned bearing gifts. This week their cover of The Magnetic Fields’s 69 Love Songs stunner “I Don’t Want to Get Over You,” originally released on a tour-exclusive 7-inch, is available wherever you stream music. The 7-inch, which also features a cover of Look Blue Go Purple’s I Don’t Want You Anyway.
No strangers to the allure of Stephin Merritt’s songbook, Superchunk’s take on “I Don’t Want to Get Over You” recasts The Magnetic Fields’ depressive epic as a manic, guitar-forward ripper, making Merritt’s lyrics writhe in an entirely new kind of agony. Featuring regularly on their 2025 setlists, the track’s magic is similar to what Superchunk accomplished on 2025’s Songs in the Key of Yikes, songs like “No Hope” and “Everybody Dies,” making a triumphant, danceable anthem despite the looming abyss.
“I Don’t Want to Get Over You” brings an end to a busy 2025 for Superchunk, whose Songs in the Key of Yikes was released on August 21, 2025. The album is a showcase of the band’s calling cards: visceral, timeless, and catchy as hell.
