CAKE ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM FOR 2025
SETTLES QUESTIONS SURROUNDING NEW SONG “BILLIONAIRE IN SPACE”
ββBillionaire in Spaceβ isnβt a song about a specific billionaire,β says CAKE founder John McCrea, reacting to widespread speculation that it was written as an attack on Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos or Richard Branson. βI wrote the song in 2020, during the apocalyptic West Coast wildfires, when everything on the ground was literally going up in smoke,β he adds.Β βI pictured the billionaires in the sky, casually orbiting, calmly looking down out of their circular windows. I couldn’t shake the image. But the song is not an indictment against these billionaires so much as it isΒ a crude meditation on the economic imbalance that weβve sleepwalked ourselves into. It is a song about being left behind.β
The talk flared recently, after the CAKE performance video was posted online, part of Live From The Freight Elevator, a series shot by Texas Public Radio, where the band also revealed plans for a new album, their first in 14 years.
ABOUT CAKE
Originally formed as a somewhat antagonistic answer to grunge, CAKE’s defiant self-reliance and lucid yet ever-inventive music has made them a nation-state unto themselves with no evident peers in sound or perspective. CAKE’s most recent album,Β Showroom of Compassion, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. While seamlessly blending numerous genres and influences, CAKE issues forth a sound and vision unlike any other band.
The band recently contributed a new song β “Hold You (Responsible)” β to the Noise For Now compilation album SONGS FOR SEX, an artist response to Project 2025. The compilation album supports the importance of standing up for bodily autonomy, reproductive freedoms, and personal privacy. The band was grateful for the chance to fight for reproductive rights for all citizens. CAKE is currently at work on their ninth album due for release during autumn 2025.
