NO FRILLS – “DARKHORSE”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
Following a string of successful singles released in anticipation of their debut album, Downward Dog (due April 1), Toronto bummer-pop outfit No Frills (featuring members of Toronto bands Hooded Fang, Twist, Rapport, and Grounders) are sharing a brand new single entitled βDarkhorseβ . The track is a sweet, lo-fi/jangle-pop tune, reminiscent of summer days, despite it’s slightly gloomier lyrical material, simply because it expresses a struggle most of us know all too well.
As songwriter Daniel Busheikin explains, “‘Darkhorse’ was written after I was fired from a cafΓ© of the same name (oops!) and is about the carrot dangling in front of our collective faces, promising an ultimate material reward that will always elude us. Basically a more pretentious version of ‘work sucks // I know.'”
Daniel describes their forthcoming album as a βpandemic record,β written while Toronto was shut down and recorded via DIY means. The result is a memorable collage of lo-fi pop that filters themes of depression, despair and death through a sardonic sense of humor.
Downward Dog arrives April 1, and βDarkhorseβ is available via all DSPS tomorrow. Previous singles βCopycat,β βI Donβt Wanna Be Your Dog Anymore,β βIce Cream Cone,β and βDripβ are available via all DSPS now.
