NO FRILLS – “DARKHORSE”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
Following a string of successful singles released in anticipation of their debut album, Downward Dog (due April 1), Toronto bummer-pop outfit No Frills (featuring members of Toronto bands Hooded Fang, Twist, Rapport, and Grounders) are sharing a brand new single entitled “Darkhorse” . The track is a sweet, lo-fi/jangle-pop tune, reminiscent of summer days, despite it’s slightly gloomier lyrical material, simply because it expresses a struggle most of us know all too well.
As songwriter Daniel Busheikin explains, “‘Darkhorse’ was written after I was fired from a café of the same name (oops!) and is about the carrot dangling in front of our collective faces, promising an ultimate material reward that will always elude us. Basically a more pretentious version of ‘work sucks // I know.'”
Daniel describes their forthcoming album as a “pandemic record,” written while Toronto was shut down and recorded via DIY means. The result is a memorable collage of lo-fi pop that filters themes of depression, despair and death through a sardonic sense of humor.
Downward Dog arrives April 1, and “Darkhorse” is available via all DSPS tomorrow. Previous singles “Copycat,” “I Don’t Wanna Be Your Dog Anymore,” “Ice Cream Cone,” and “Drip” are available via all DSPS now.
