BOOK REVIEW BY AARON BADGLEY
As the title would indicate, Turn My Head into Sound: A History of Kevin Shields and My Bloody Valentine is a book about Kevin Shields, not just his time with My Bloody Valentine. Of course they look large throughout the entire book, but this is really about Kevin Shields, and his life and work both with My Bloody Valentine and outside. Andrew Perer has researched the topic thoroughly, interviewed numerous people who were involved and offers his own insights into this unique and very original artist.
Shields’ own upbringing, moving from New York to Dublin, and experiencing that culture shock in many ways, contributed to his vision of music. Influenced by The Beatles, The Ramones, and Buzzcocks, Shields wanted a career in music. And with My Bloody Valentine he was able to achieve his goal. Turn My Head into Sound: A History of Kevin Shields and My Bloody Valentine is a fascinating book that tells Shields story, from his childhood and the importance of music right through to present day.
There is a lot to learn in Shields work with Patti Smith, remastering and remixing music for Bow Wow Wow—for which he thinks he was overpaid, collaborating with composer Brian Reitzell, mainly for the film Lost in Translation, and of course his work with Primal Scream. All this to say that between the many reunions of My Bloody Valentine, Shields worked on a number of diverse, interesting, and time-consuming projects.
Peter also offers a short chapter explaining the history of the genre ‘Shoegaze’ and provides other insights throughout the book. Turn My Head into Sound: A History of Kevin Shields and My Bloody Valentine is a well-written book about an artist who has been misunderstood throughout the years. With Turn My Head into Sound: A History of Kevin Shields and My Bloody Valentine, author Perer details the professional life of Shields. It is fascinating reading, even for non-fans. At the end of the book, one is left with the knowledge that Shields is a very talented artist who strives for perfection.
