SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: YVES JARVIS – ALL CYLINDERS (DELUXE)

Yves Jarvis

YVES JARVIS
ALL CYLINDERS (DELUXE)
NEXT DOOR RECORDS

After winning the 2025 Polaris Music Prize for Best Album. Montreal-based R&B artist Yves Jarvis has released All Cylinders (Deluxe) with five new songs for a celebratory victory lap.

All Cylinder kicks off with “With A Grain,” from 45 seconds of funky psychedelic guitar riff and drums to a cacophony of whimsical spontaneity vibes and joy about self-confidence. Switching gears from a funky walk-up song to “Gold Filigree.” It refers to an intricate art form in metalworks used in jewellery making, and here it is also an R&B and soft rock ballad infusion of an infatuation with a woman dressed up in a fine dress at a ritzy event. It also reminds one of the perfect slow dance at prom or at a wedding.

One of the standout tracks in the record is “The Knife In Me.” The two-minute track may sound upbeat, but it later slips into negative thoughts and feelings. It’s the kind of feeling that, on the outside, you’re fine but fighting inner demons on the inside.

The five new tracks added to the deluxe record: “Silver KG,” “Off To Honeymoon,” “Man In His Pomp,” “Chalk It Up,” and “Time To Behave” go from yearning the perfect girl in a cheerful mood, fusing country and fantasizing the perfect wedding with a gentle country tune to a folk amalgamation of country, folk, and funk, with a hint of rock layered in buttery vocals. It adds depth to the original record in a linear theme from first crush to marriage, like a bow wrapped up in a neatly packed present.

Overall, All Cylinders is a vibey mixture of soul, funk, country, and psychedelic rock that is guaranteed for a good time, harkening back to the early 2010s, falling in love while coming to grips with dealing with anxiety and self-doubt, to fantasizing about love and marriage.
