YATTA!
GLITTERBEAT

Dutch-based psychedelic band YĪN YĪN embraces the perfect imbalance in their fourth record, Yatta!, which translates to ‘We did it!’ in Japanese. YĪN YĪN is known for their blend of Southeast Asian influences, disco, funk, surf, and psychedelia.
Leading off in Yatta! is “In Search of Yang.” Referring to an ancient Chinese philosophy, Yin Yang, the balance between light and dark, the song opens with a quote from British American philosopher Alan Watts: “There is no Yang without Yin and there’s no Yin without Yang.” It is accompanied by an upbeat disco production that is guaranteed to get you grooving on the dance floor.
“Spirit Adapter” is a love letter to disco using Southeast Asian influences and psychedelia that literally transports you to 1970s Thailand as you dance in the streets of Bangkok at night.
“Lecker Song” is a standout track from the album. Picture the iconic James Bond theme song but make it sound like a 1960s Japanese spy movie with soul and funk vibes. It features gritty, guitar instrumentals with a hint of koto, as the main character executes missions with style and grace that oozes swag and debonair.
Traversing from one city to the next is “Nights in Taipei.” The two-minute sensual track opens to a slow, funk and soul jam that is reminiscent of Wong-Kar Wai’s film In The Mood For Love, where Maggie Cheung’s and Tony Leung’s characters romantically embrace each other in a scene. It is also a perfect track for a slow dance jam at a wedding.
“Golden Lion” begins with a slow, lo-fi, groovy, funky, 55-sec guitar riff which switches to normal tempo. It exudes and screams main character energy like a spaghetti western film except it’s set in night time drenched in colourful neon lights.
YĪN YĪN’s Yatta! continues to mature in its artistry delivering groovy vibes from front to back as it transports you to different cities and regions.
