SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: THE ZOMBIES – DIFFERENT GAME

The Zombies

The Zombies
Different Game
Cooking Vinyl Records

Rock legends The Zombies are back and better than ever with their latest album, Different Game. It showcases a band at the top of its game in terms of songwriting, instrumentation, and vocals.

Rod Argent is electrifying on the keys, and Colin Blunstone’s vocals are astonishing. They make a perfect team and complement one another so well. Argent has many cool riffs and impressive solos, like his groovy and melodic work on “Dropped Reeling & Stupid”. Blunstone constantly shows how talented he is on each track and will blow you away with how amazing his voice is, especially in the song “I Want To Fly”.

Similar to their classic songs like “She’s Not There” or “Time Of The Season”, Different Game offers an excellent combination of rock, jazz, and psychedelia. “Rediscover” is one of the best examples of this. It has a great balance of jazz and rock elements and a super catchy vocal harmony opening.

“Love You While I Can” is the standout track from an album full of incredible songs. It is a complete masterpiece. Lyrically it is poignant, sweet and relatable. The acoustic guitar melody is soothing, gorgeous, and perfectly arranged. Colin Blunstone’s vocals are beautiful and mesmerizing. It is a hypnotically stunning song and one of the best love ballads I have heard in a long time. When it comes to making songs about love, The Zombies are one of the best.

“The Sun Will Rise Again” is a fantastic way to finish the album. It features some of the most heartfelt, genuine, and moving lyrics from the album, particularly the line “how can you love if you never tasted tears?”.

Different Game will please longtime fans of The Zombies and is guaranteed to create new ones.
