BBC’s Gilles Peterson is considered one of the most discerning DJs and music producers around. So, when he endorses an artist, you need to prick up your ears, no matter what kind of sounds you favour. London musician and producer, Sholto, quickly found a place on Peterson’s list, particularly with his previous double album, Letting Go of Forever, and he surely will not go off that list with The Sirens, his latest.

Oscar Robertson, who goes by the Sholto moniker, appears to have an extensive library of, well, prime-time library music. It’s that psychedelic, jazzy, funk-infused multi-purpose music usually reserved for cinematic purposes; the album sounds just like a motion picture soundtrack.

At the same time, Sholto is not trying to replicate or copy any of these sounds, but seems to have fully digested his influences. This ends up creating something that’s truly his own, giving that ‘70s staple a new-century touch that makes it sound practically new. It is all in the small touches; these attributes create quite a wide cinematic picture that envelops the listener while it is around.
