SHAINA HAYES
KINDERGARTEN HEART
BONSOUND
When a singer-songwriter presents something quite individual and personal, without being self-centered, you simply cannot dismiss her or him as the ‘standard fare.’
That is exactly the conclusion listeners will reach listening to Kindergarten Heart, the sophomore album by Montreal-based singer-songwriter Shaina Hayes. Sure, Hayes is inspired by those great similar authors that came before her like Joni Mitchell or Feist but coming originally from a tiny town called Shigawake on the Gaspé coast of Quebec, Hayes has enough county roots within herself to have listened and immersed herself in the likes of Hank Williams and Dolly Parton to add enough country music elements in what she is doing.
Still, the key there is to make the pop, rock, country combination sound like something quite personal, something that just might not be that easy for some. For Hayes though it sounds like something quite natural and easy, as is her music when it reaches the ears of her listeners.
