SHADY COVE
PART II
INDEPENDENT
Working within the sub-genre that is defined as dream-pop might sound a simple task to some listeners, but bringing in something else there, that touches upon other musical streams like bedroom or jangle pop, or anything else for that matter, is neither simple nor easy.
Portland OR’s Shady Cove does exactly that—combine and mix touching on everybody from Slowdive and Spiritualized to Yo La Tengo and New Zealand’s greats The Clean.
Relying mainly on the songwriting skills of two Sarahs, Rose and Nienaber, the trio’s latest album is simply titled Part II. Yet, behind the seemingly simple title, one word song titles and breezy melodies there are some complex musical ideas that the trio treat with an easy, but effective touch, creating gems like “True” or “Ocean”.
These complex ideas evolve slowly but surely, with Shady Cove creating some excellent music that never exceeds the listener’s welcome. One of the surprises of the year so far.
