R.E. SERAPHIN
FOOL’S MATE
TAKE A TURN/SAFE SUBURBAN HOME RECORDS
It feels a bit like power pop was in a bit of a doghouse after its second upsurge in the 90s, but with quite a new number of artists favoring the genre (or sub-genre, if you will), there seems to be some kind of its resurgence recently. Concentrating on a good pop/rock melody is always welcome!
One of these new artists is certainly Bay Area artist R.E. Seraphin, and his new album Fool’s Mate is here to prove that. This is Seraphin’s second album after his debut Tiny Shapes from 2020 and a pair of EPs that followed. Yet it shows that Seraphin has a clear, defined sound that relies squarely on a good, catchy melodies, and more on equally clear guitar sound, without any overly power-oriented histrionics and Seraphin’s somewhat hushed lyrics, probably with the intention for the listener to pay attention a bit more closely, because he does have something more to say than that he is just aching for some love.
He has a full band with him this time around and that makes his sound catch on to that power element in power pop, making this album a clear winner.
